The 2016 Michigan Jr. Development Clinic was a success! A huge thank you to Tivoli Gardens Water Ski club for donating their site for 2 days, Silver Spray Sports for donating a Nautique 200 to pull the skiers and all the volunteers. Volunteers included Cale Burdick as host and coach, Doug Rooker, Mark Budzynski, and Brent Overmire as drivers, and David Huisman, Jack Phillipson, and Jared Lutz as on shore coaches and lunch runners!
All 20 spots were filled by skiers 18 years and younger. They worked on skills in events of their choice: slalom, trick, or jump. Even though there were some stiff winds, we still had a skier land a jump for the first time and some slalom personal bests achieved by Calvin Cody and Jack Haase! All the skiers worked on technique and course strategy and learned many things to go home and work on.
Each day while the skiers weren’t on the water, they were able to enjoy playing on shore games, making new friends all while sporting their new Junior Development T-Shirts.
To cap off each day a few awards were given out thanks to the designs of LiquidCut. They included: A spectacular face plant by Mirabel Rachwal which earned her “Best Crash”, a first time jump landing by Drew Budzynski earning him the “Most Improved” award, and Halle Overmire earned “Best Mental Attitude” for her approach on and off the water. Other awards included “Most Likely to go Pro”and an onshore award for “Badminton Pro”!
The clinic went smoothly due to the hard work of the volunteers and more importantly the bright young skiers that attended! Be sure to thank them and cheer them on if you see them at the Michigan State Championships this weekend at Jepawhit in Gaines.
